Electric safety inspection of portable power tools

To maintain all portable power tools in working condition and safe for use, it is necessary to establish a safety inspection system for the same. It shall be ensured that portable power tools/equipment are tested and certified by qualified person prior to use. Following is the responsibility matrix for arranging the testing and certification of various portable power tools/equipment:‐

  • A sticker showing the result of inspection (OK/Not OK), Date of Inspection and Validity shall be pasted on all tools by certifying agency. A specimen sticker for “Portable Electrical Tools Inspection Status” .
  • Tools having OK status shall only be permitted for use throughout project sites. Defective tools (with Not OK status) shall be kept at identified place for repair. Tools that cannot be repaired shall be rejected.
  • This is the responsibility of Electrical Managers (including contractors) to ensure that no substandard portable electrical tool is in use in their respective areas. They shall get these tools inspected by concerned authorized electrical person and display the status.
  • Concerned electrical person shall also inspect/check the portable power tool before giving electrical connection to it. Electrical connection shall be given to only tested/certified tools/equipment.
  • The owner (including contractors) is responsible to get all portable power tools/equipment under his custody tested and certified from concerned

authority before taking in use. He shall also ensure that tools are retested/certified after expiry of validity.
